Washington: The United States military has confirmed that 16 American service members have been killed since the conflict with Iran began nearly five months ago, following the deaths of two additional troops during an attack in Jordan. The latest fatalities come amid renewed fighting after both Washington and Tehran declared that the interim Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing hostilities was no longer in effect.

The rising death toll highlights the widening impact of the conflict across West Asia, where US military personnel stationed in several countries continue to face missile and drone attacks linked to the escalating confrontation with Iran.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the two service members were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan. The military also said one US service member remains missing following the attack.

Latest deaths push toll to 16

The announcement marks another setback for the United States as military operations against Iran intensify.

CENTCOM said it would withhold the identities of the deceased until at least 24 hours after their families had been notified, in keeping with military protocol.

The White House did not immediately issue a separate statement on the latest casualties. Instead, it referred to the statement released by US Central Command.

President Donald Trump has maintained that the military campaign is necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Casualties since the conflict began

The first American fatalities occurred shortly after the conflict began on February 28.

According to US military accounts, six American soldiers were killed in an Iranian drone strike on a civilian port in Kuwait. The troops, belonging to a logistics and supply unit based in Iowa, were working in a temporary shipping-container facility that reportedly lacked defensive protection.

A seventh service member later died from injuries sustained during an Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on March 1.

Later that month, six additional personnel lost their lives when a KC-135 aerial refuelling aircraft supporting US operations crashed in Iraq. The aircraft was operating in friendly airspace when an incident involving another aircraft reportedly occurred.

Earlier this month, the US Navy also confirmed that one pilot died after a helicopter crashed into the Arabian Sea. The remaining crew members were rescued.

The latest attack in Jordan has now raised the confirmed American military death toll to 16.

Conflict expands across the region

The fighting has spread well beyond Iran’s borders, reflecting the extensive US military presence across the Middle East.

American troops stationed in countries including Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia have increasingly become targets of missile and drone attacks as hostilities escalate.

US officials have continued to carry out strikes on Iranian military facilities, arguing that the operations are aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities and protecting American personnel deployed across the region.

The collapse of the interim Memorandum of Understanding has further increased concerns about a prolonged military confrontation.

Civilian casualties continue to mount

The human cost of the conflict extends beyond military personnel.

Iranian authorities have said that at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US strikes over the past three weeks.

Among the latest reported incidents was an attack on a bridge on Friday that reportedly killed eight people.

The wider conflict has also claimed the lives of civilians and foreign workers across several countries, including Gulf states, Israel and Lebanon, underscoring the growing regional impact of the war.

Diplomatic prospects remain uncertain

The latest escalation comes after both Washington and Tehran declared that the interim peace understanding reached earlier this year was no longer valid.

The collapse of diplomatic efforts has led to an increase in military operations by both sides, with continued exchanges of missile strikes, drone attacks and air raids.

International observers have expressed concern that further escalation could destabilise the wider Middle East, disrupt global energy markets and increase humanitarian challenges across the region.

With military operations continuing and diplomatic channels appearing stalled, the conflict shows few signs of easing in the near future.
