In the wake of former President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration reforms, the US Embassy in India has issued a firm advisory for Indian citizens. It warns that overstaying any US visa could lead to deportation and possibly a lifetime prohibition from re-entering the country.
The alert is relevant to Indians visiting the United States on time-bound visas such as those for tourism, education, or employment. Each visa type has a specific legal stay duration, and exceeding that limit can have severe consequences. The embassy cautioned that breaching visa terms, even slightly, may invoke a permanent travel ban.
Immigration policy was one of the most controversial aspects of Trump’s presidency. From the outset, he prioritized tightening borders and reducing undocumented entries. One of his earliest executive orders challenged the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause, which grants US citizenship to nearly all individuals born on American soil. Although this order is entangled in legal challenges, the administration had begun mass deportations, arrests, and even urged voluntary self-removal from the country.
In a notable shift, all foreigners staying in the US for more than 30 days must now register with federal authorities under updated immigration guidelines.
Two Indian nationals recently came under the spotlight. Ranjani Srinivasan, a Columbia University doctoral candidate, escaped to Canada after her visa was cancelled over alleged involvement in a pro-Palestinian rally — a charge she denies. Another case involved Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown researcher with alleged ties to Hamas. Though detained, a court found insufficient evidence of national security threats and ordered his release.
