The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to a call regarding an assault involving a knife around 8:15 p.m. on Monday in the 700 block of West 28th Street. According to the LAPD, “The victim, a male, was reportedly breaking into vehicles in the area when the suspect confronted him and allegedly stabbed him.”

Interim LAPD Chief Dominic Choi provided further details, stating that Gallegos encountered the homeless man breaking into his car in the rear parking lot of a fraternity house. During their interaction, the man purportedly claimed to possess a firearm, prompting Gallegos to act, resulting in the stabbing.

The Los Angeles Times reported that no firearm was found at the scene of the crime.

The identity of the homeless victim has not been disclosed. He was pronounced dead at the location.

Gallegos, a resident of Los Angeles, remained present and cooperative at the scene and was subsequently arrested. He has been formally accused of murder and is being held on $2 million bail.

In a profile by USC’s Annenberg Media last month, Gallegos was featured as a rising musical talent and student at the Marshall School of Business.

The report detailed Gallegos’s upbringing amidst his parents’ involvement in gangs, which occasionally led to their imprisonment. Despite the challenges of growing up in an environment marked by drugs and gang activity, Gallegos focused on music, honing his skills as both an instrumentalist and vocalist.

A spokeswoman managing the Delta Tau Delta fraternity confirmed to Eyewitness News that Gallegos is a member of the fraternity and a USC student. She requested anonymity but disclosed that Gallegos was indeed the individual arrested in connection with the incident.
