An 85-year-old cinema employee in the United States has received an overwhelming outpouring of support after a viral social media video inspired thousands of people to contribute towards her retirement fund.

Mary Ellen Eron, who has worked in movie theatres for nearly 45 years, became an internet sensation after a customer shared a video of her diligently performing her duties at an AMC theatre in Maryville, Tennessee.

Video sparks wave of generosity

The video showed Eron pushing a cleaning cart and carrying heavy rubbish bags while on duty. Moved by her dedication, theatre-goer Brooklyn Green posted the clip online and later launched a fundraising campaign to help her retire comfortably.

Green said she was inspired by Eron’s work ethic and felt she deserved the opportunity to enjoy her retirement years without financial worries.

Thousands donate to retirement fund

The fundraiser quickly gained momentum, attracting more than 7,500 donors. Within days, contributions exceeded USD 146,000 (over ₹1.2 crore), prompting organisers to pause further donations.

When presented with the total amount raised, Eron appeared emotional and expressed gratitude to the thousands of strangers who contributed.

“I’m overwhelmed and certainly blessed,” she said in a video message thanking donors.

Community celebrates her dedication

According to reports, Eron is known in her community not only for her long service in cinemas but also for her charitable work supporting homeless individuals and church activities.

While the donations have provided financial security, theatre management said the decision on whether and when to retire remains entirely hers.

The story has resonated widely online, with many praising the power of kindness and collective generosity in helping a hardworking woman receive recognition after decades of service.
