A 28-year-old woman from the United States was left stunned after giving birth to a healthy baby on Christmas Day — without ever knowing she was pregnant.

Melanie Smith told ABC News that she had believed for years that she could not have children. Nearly a decade ago, doctors had informed her that irregularities in her uterus would likely prevent her from carrying a pregnancy to term.

Sudden pain leads to shocking discovery

In the early hours of December 25, Smith experienced severe stomach pain, which she initially dismissed as constipation. As the pain intensified, she went to a hospital in Waukegan with her husband, Donovan O’Dell. Doctors soon delivered unexpected news — she was in labour.

Roughly two hours later, Smith gave birth to her son, Vincent Antonio O’Dell, weighing 8 pounds and 1 ounce. The baby is the couple’s first child.

A rare cryptic pregnancy

Doctors later explained that Smith had experienced a cryptic pregnancy, a rare condition where a woman remains unaware she is pregnant until labour. According to medical staff, the baby had been positioned behind her spine, masking visible pregnancy signs.

Smith said she had not experienced common symptoms apart from back pain, which she attributed to cold weather and a previous back surgery in 2020.

Baby declared healthy

Following the delivery, mother and child were transferred to Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital for further evaluation. Vincent underwent medical tests and was declared healthy despite the absence of prenatal care.

Dr Adrienne Adams, medical director of maternity services, explained that irregular menstrual cycles and subtle symptoms can make pregnancy difficult to detect in some cases.

Medical research suggests cryptic pregnancies, while rare, are documented globally. Estimates indicate around 1 in 2,500 pregnancies may go unnoticed until labour.

New life, new beginnings

Smith admitted she had never planned on becoming a mother, especially believing it was not possible. However, she now says she cannot imagine life without her son. The family has since relocated from Illinois to Arizona to be closer to relatives.

“I’m still in shock,” Smith said, “but I’m doing great — and my son is just amazing.”
