In a tragic accident, a young woman died after falling off a treadmill and out of a third-floor window at a gym in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The incident occurred around 1 pm on Tuesday, June 18. A video circulating online shows the 22-year-old running on the treadmill before stopping to wipe her face with a towel. She then lost her balance, stumbled backwards, and fell through an open window, as reported by the New York Post.

The woman desperately tried to grab the window frame but ultimately fell three stories. She was rushed to the hospital with severe head injuries, but doctors were unable to save her. An autopsy revealed extensive bruising and lacerations to her head.

The victim had come to the gym with her boyfriend, who was exercising on the second floor when the incident happened, according to local media.

An investigation revealed that the treadmill was only 60 cm away from the window. Police noted that the treadmill’s position created a hazardous situation. “It’s very easy for someone to fall off the treadmill and then fall down,” said Pontianak Police Commissioner Antonius Trias Kuncurojati.

Although the gym had warning stickers advising patrons not to open windows, the sticker was reportedly damaged. The gym owner explained that the treadmills faced the windows to avoid blocking the view. A personal trainer responsible for closing open windows was on a break when the accident occurred. The gym was subsequently closed for three days.

Authorities are now investigating the gym for alleged negligence and reviewing its operating permit. Police are questioning several witnesses and seeking expert opinions.

The incident has raised widespread concern and calls for stricter safety measures in gyms across the region.
