In a surprising turn of events, a banana taped to a wall has become the world’s most expensive fruit, fetching a staggering $6.2 million (₹52.4 crore) at an auction. This wasn’t just any banana but an artwork titled “Comedian”, created by renowned Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.

The auction took place on November 20 in New York, where multiple bidders vied for the piece. Ultimately, Justin Sun, a Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur and founder of TRON, won the bid, paying four times its estimated value.

A ₹29 Banana Turned Multi-Million Dollar Artwork

What makes this sale even more astonishing is that the banana itself originally cost just $0.35 (around ₹29). Placed against a blank wall and affixed with duct tape, the artwork made waves in the art world, sparking debates on what truly defines modern art.

The Journey of “Comedian”

First exhibited at Art Basel Miami in 2019, “Comedian” was initially sold in three versions, each priced between $120,000 and $150,000. It quickly became a symbol of contemporary art’s unpredictability, with strict guidelines instructing owners to replace the banana once it starts decaying.

This record-breaking sale has reignited discussions on the value of conceptual art and the power of perception in determining worth.
