MADIKERI: In a touching gesture of solidarity, Madikeri MLA Dr Mantar Gowda has constructed a new house for the family of Meena, the 15-year-old girl from Mutlu village who was murdered by her 35-year-old fiancé in May 2024.

Meena, who had just received her SSLC results, was tragically killed in a brutal attack that drew nationwide outrage. The accused, Onkarappa, had beheaded the girl before fleeing. He was later apprehended and is currently facing trial.

The victim’s family, who lived in dire poverty in a flimsy hut, caught public attention after media coverage highlighted their living conditions. Responding to their plight, Dr Gowda pledged to support the grieving family.

True to his word, the MLA personally funded the construction of a new home, spending Rs 8.5 lakh from his own resources. The house now stands as a small beacon of relief amidst deep sorrow.

“During my visit, the family poured out their pain. I promised to help and I’ve done my part. It’s brought me great personal satisfaction,” said Dr Gowda, speaking about the emotional project.

Meena’s mother, U Janaki, expressed both gratitude and grief: “We thank the MLA for honouring his commitment. But this home also reminds us of the daughter we lost. She should’ve been starting college now.”

The home may not erase their pain, but it offers the family some stability as they continue to mourn.
