AI Surveillance & ANPR Tech Boost Metro Security in Bengaluru Pilot
In a major step to fortify commuter safety and perimeter vigilance, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has introduced AI-powered surveillance systems at six key metro stations between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road. This pilot initiative—rolled out on Thursday—aims to bolster real-time threat detection, crowd management, and emergency response capabilities, as reported by Deccan Herald.
Unlike previous CCTV setups focused solely on station interiors, the new system uses Advanced Video Analytics and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to monitor both internal and external station environments. BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao said the upgrade enhances situational awareness, enabling quicker identification of suspicious activities and faster response coordination.
The ANPR technology captures vehicle registration details in the vicinity, aiding law enforcement during high-alert scenarios. Authorities expect the pilot’s success to pave the way for network-wide deployment in the coming months.
In parallel, Bengaluru has achieved a milestone in digital policing by geo-tagging over 5.35 lakh CCTV cameras citywide as part of the Mobile Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (MCCTNS). Over 3 lakh of these installations were added since January 2024, significantly reinforcing the city’s surveillance grid.
Together, these initiatives reflect Bengaluru’s growing reliance on smart surveillance to tackle urban security challenges in real time.
