New Delhi: BMW India has confirmed that it will launch the BMW X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in the country on August 21, expanding its long-wheelbase luxury vehicle portfolio. The stretched version of the popular luxury SUV is expected to offer significantly more rear-seat space, additional premium features and improved comfort while retaining the familiar styling of the standard X1.
The BMW X1 LWB will become the brand’s most affordable petrol-powered long-wheelbase model in India and will join the already available BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase, which was introduced earlier.
Launch scheduled for August 21
BMW India officially teased the upcoming SUV on social media while confirming its launch date.
The move comes after the positive response received by the electric BMW iX1 LWB, with the company now introducing an internal combustion engine (ICE) version aimed at buyers seeking additional rear-seat comfort in the luxury SUV segment.
Longer dimensions, roomier cabin
The biggest highlight of the X1 LWB is its increased size.
Compared with the standard BMW X1 sold in India, the long-wheelbase version is approximately 116 mm longer and 11 mm taller, while its wheelbase has been stretched by 110 mm. The additional length has primarily been used to create more legroom and rear-seat comfort, making the SUV particularly attractive to chauffeur-driven buyers and families.
Despite the larger dimensions, the exterior design remains largely unchanged, retaining BMW’s signature kidney grille, slim LED headlamps and sculpted body lines.
Premium interior expected
Inside, the BMW X1 LWB is expected to feature a more spacious second row with enhanced cushioning and greater knee room.
The SUV is also likely to receive a panoramic sunroof, dual curved digital displays running BMW’s latest infotainment software, wireless smartphone connectivity, premium upholstery, ambient lighting and advanced driver assistance features similar to those offered in international markets.
Engine options
BMW has not yet disclosed the India-spec powertrain details.
However, reports suggest the SUV could be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 204 hp, paired with an automatic transmission. Final specifications will be announced at the time of launch.
The long-wheelbase X1 was originally developed for the Chinese market, where demand for chauffeur-friendly luxury vehicles remains strong.
Position in BMW’s India lineup
The X1 has consistently been among BMW India’s best-selling luxury SUVs.
With the addition of the long-wheelbase version, BMW aims to strengthen its position in the entry-level luxury SUV segment while offering buyers a more spacious alternative without moving into larger and significantly more expensive models such as the X3 or X5.
The new model is also expected to compete with premium SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40, while differentiating itself through its extended rear-seat space.

Although BMW has not announced official pricing, industry estimates suggest the X1 LWB could command a modest premium over the standard BMW X1 because of its increased dimensions and additional equipment.
