Luxury carmaker Jaguar has officially confirmed that its upcoming all-electric grand tourer will be called the Jaguar Type 01, marking the beginning of a new era for the British brand.
The naming strategy reflects Jaguar’s attempt to blend its historic legacy with a future-focused electric identity. According to the company, the word “Type” revives a naming tradition strongly associated with some of Jaguar’s most iconic performance cars, while the numerical designation “0” symbolises zero-emission mobility and “1” represents the first model in Jaguar’s reinvented electric era.
Jaguar’s history includes several celebrated ‘Type’ models, such as the legendary Jaguar E-Type and the race-inspired Jaguar D-Type. More recently, the now-discontinued Jaguar F-Type continued the use of the badge in the brand’s modern line-up.
Prototypes to appear at Monaco Formula E weekend
Jaguar has announced that heavily camouflaged prototypes of the Type 01 will make a public appearance during the Monaco Formula E weekend scheduled for May 16 and 17.
The prototypes will be displayed ahead of race activities involving Jaguar TCS Racing.
According to the company, the test vehicles will feature a specially designed camouflage wrap with bold linear graphics and prominent ‘Type 01’ branding positioned near the bonnet line.
The showcase is expected to provide enthusiasts and industry observers with an early glimpse of Jaguar’s upcoming design direction, although the final production version will remain undisclosed for now.
Jaguar Type 01 expected to feature dramatic styling
While Jaguar has not yet revealed the production-ready design, earlier spy photographs and development previews have hinted at a striking grand tourer silhouette.
The Type 01 is expected to feature a long bonnet, a sweeping coupe-inspired roofline, and sharply upright front and rear styling elements. The overall design is likely to combine traditional GT proportions with modern electric vehicle aesthetics.
Industry reports suggest Jaguar is positioning the Type 01 as a high-performance luxury EV aimed at competing with premium electric grand tourers from rival luxury manufacturers.
The model is expected to embody Jaguar’s new design language focused on modernist styling, advanced technology, and performance-oriented dynamics.
New EV architecture and nearly 1,000 bhp expected
The upcoming electric GT will reportedly be based on Jaguar’s dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) platform, developed specifically for the company’s next-generation EV portfolio.
Performance is expected to be a major highlight of the new model.
Reports indicate that the Type 01 could feature a tri-motor powertrain producing close to 1,000 bhp along with torque figures exceeding 1,300 Nm. Such specifications would position the car among the most powerful luxury electric GTs currently under development.
Jaguar is also expected to equip the vehicle with advanced air suspension and twin-valve active dampers aimed at delivering a balance between high-speed performance and premium ride comfort.
The company appears to be targeting buyers looking for a blend of luxury, long-distance usability, and sports car-like driving dynamics.
Claimed range of up to 700 km
Jaguar claims the Type 01 could offer a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 700 km on a single charge.
If achieved in production form, the figure would place the model among the longer-range premium electric vehicles expected to enter the market in the coming years.
The Type 01 is being described by Jaguar as the clearest representation yet of its future engineering and design philosophy as the company transitions into a fully electric luxury brand.
The production-ready version of the vehicle is expected to make its global debut later in 2026 and will likely set the design and technological direction for all future Jaguar models.
The launch of the Type 01 marks a significant step in Jaguar’s ongoing transformation strategy as the iconic British marque seeks to redefine itself in the rapidly evolving premium electric vehicle segment.
