Pune: Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed that all petrol vehicles currently sold by the luxury carmaker in the country are E25-ready, making its entire petrol portfolio compatible with fuel containing up to 25 per cent ethanol. The move places the company among the early luxury automobile brands in India to prepare its complete petrol range for higher ethanol-blended fuel.
The announcement comes as India continues to expand the use of ethanol-blended petrol to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, support domestic ethanol production and lower vehicular emissions. While E20 petrol has already been introduced across large parts of the country, automobile manufacturers are preparing their vehicles for the next stage of ethanol blending.
Mercedes-Benz India said its petrol models have been upgraded in anticipation of future fuel requirements rather than waiting for regulations to make the changes mandatory.
What Mercedes-Benz said about E25 compatibility
Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer said the company had already updated its petrol vehicle range with future fuel standards in mind.
According to the company, every new petrol-powered Mercedes-Benz vehicle sold in India is compatible with E25 petrol. The announcement was made during the launch of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 plug-in hybrid, which was introduced as part of the brand’s broader strategy of offering multiple powertrain options to Indian customers.
The company said it wants buyers to have access to different technologies, including conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, instead of moving entirely towards one type of powertrain.
This approach reflects the changing nature of India’s premium automobile market, where customers continue to consider factors such as driving range, charging infrastructure, fuel availability and long-term ownership costs before choosing a vehicle.
What does E25-ready mean?
E25 petrol is a blend containing 25 per cent ethanol and 75 per cent petrol. Ethanol is generally produced from agricultural feedstock such as sugarcane and grain-based materials.
A vehicle described as E25-ready has components designed to handle a higher proportion of ethanol in petrol. This can include changes to parts of the fuel system, engine calibration and materials used in components that come into contact with the fuel.
Higher ethanol content can affect certain vehicle parts because ethanol has different chemical properties from conventional petrol. Therefore, compatibility depends on the vehicle’s engineering and manufacturer approval.
Mercedes-Benz’s announcement is expected to reassure buyers of newer petrol models that the company’s current vehicles have been prepared for a possible increase in ethanol blending beyond the existing E20 level.
Why the move matters for Indian buyers

The announcement applies to the company’s current petrol portfolio and should not be treated as a blanket confirmation for every Mercedes-Benz vehicle already on Indian roads.

Mercedes-Benz said it will continue offering a mix of petrol and other internal combustion engine vehicles, battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in India.
The company believes that customers should be able to choose a powertrain based on their individual requirements. While electric vehicles are gaining popularity, conventional engines and hybrid technologies continue to play an important role in the luxury segment.
The newly launched Mercedes-AMG E 53 Performance Edition, priced at Rs 1.45 crore, ex-showroom, is part of this strategy. The model is the first electrified AMG E-Class to be introduced in India and combines performance-focused engineering with hybrid technology.
Mercedes-Benz’s wider portfolio includes luxury sedans, SUVs, electric vehicles and high-performance AMG models, allowing it to cater to customers with different preferences.
