India: Mercedes-Benz India has launched the new Mercedes-Maybach S 580e 4MATIC at Rs 3.35 crore (ex-showroom), marking the arrival of the first electrified Maybach model in the Indian market. The luxury sedan combines a six-cylinder petrol engine with a plug-in hybrid system and will initially be offered in a limited batch of 30 units.

The new Maybach S 580e replaces the previous V8-powered Maybach S-Class with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, while retaining the brand’s focus on rear-seat comfort, luxury and bespoke personalisation.

Maybach S 580e gets new plug-in hybrid powertrain

The biggest change in the new Maybach S 580e is its powertrain.

The sedan uses a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine producing 443hp and 560Nm, paired with an electric motor generating 160hp and 480Nm. The combined system output is rated at 585hp and 750Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission.

The plug-in hybrid system uses a 22kWh battery and provides a WLTP-certified electric range of up to around 98km. Mercedes-Benz says the car can travel at speeds of up to 140kmph in electric mode.

The S 580e can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 4.8 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph.

The car supports up to 11kW AC charging and up to 60kW DC fast charging. Mercedes-Benz is also offering a complimentary home charging solution with the vehicle.

V6 replaces the outgoing V8

The move to a plug-in hybrid six-cylinder engine represents a significant change for the Maybach S-Class in India.

The outgoing model used a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, while the new S 580e combines a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine with electric assistance. Despite the smaller combustion engine, the hybrid system delivers strong combined performance with 585hp and 750Nm.

The powertrain also offers three dedicated driving modes — Maybach, Electric and Battery Hold — along with adjustable energy recuperation.

The shift towards electrification allows Mercedes-Benz to retain high performance while reducing reliance on the conventional large-capacity petrol engine.

Four-seat configuration focuses on rear passengers

The India-spec Mercedes-Maybach S 580e is available exclusively as a four-seat luxury sedan.

It gets individual Executive rear seats separated by a full-length business console. The rear passengers have access to features such as wireless charging, temperature-controlled cup holders and the Rear Comfort Package Plus.

The rear seats are designed to remain the centrepiece of the Maybach experience, with Mercedes-Benz offering extensive comfort and personalisation options.

The cabin also features Maybach-exclusive Nappa leather, handcrafted trim elements and Manufaktur interior options.

Burmester 4D sound system with 31 speakers

The Maybach S 580e comes equipped with a premium Burmester 4D surround sound system.

The system features 31 speakers, eight exciters and 1,610 watts of output. Rear passengers also get two entertainment screens with wireless headsets, adding to the focus on chauffeur-driven travel.

Other technology features include the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System, MBUX Superscreen, a 3D driver display, augmented-reality navigation and a head-up display.

The combination of digital technology and traditional luxury materials is intended to position the Maybach as a high-end chauffeur-driven sedan.

Advanced safety and driver assistance features

The Maybach S 580e also comes with a comprehensive set of safety and driver assistance technologies.

The sedan gets 15 airbags, PRE-SAFE systems and Level 2 driver assistance features. Mercedes-Benz has also equipped it with Digital Light and Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus.

AIRMATIC air suspension is standard, with the system using navigation data to anticipate road conditions and adjust damping.

The car also gets rear-axle steering of up to 10 degrees, which can reduce the turning circle at low speeds while improving stability at higher speeds.

Maybach-specific exterior styling

The S 580e retains the basic proportions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class but receives distinctive Maybach design elements.

The front gets an illuminated Maybach grille with vertical slats, along with an illuminated Mercedes star on the bonnet. The grille is larger than before, while the headlamps feature updated Digital Light technology and Maybach-specific detailing.

The Maybach S-Class is also longer than the regular long-wheelbase S-Class, providing additional space for rear occupants.

The India-spec model rides on 20-inch forged Maybach wheels featuring a counterweighted Mercedes logo designed to remain upright as the wheels rotate.

The Maybach logo on the D-pillar is also illuminated.

Extensive personalisation options

As expected from the Maybach range, Mercedes-Benz is offering several personalisation options for the S 580e.

Customers can select MANUFAKTUR exterior finishes, including bespoke two-tone paint combinations. Inside, the car can be configured with Maybach-exclusive Nappa leather, piano-lacquer trim and a handcrafted Nappa leather roof liner.

These options allow customers to customise the vehicle beyond the standard equipment offered with the India-spec model.

Limited to 30 units initially

Mercedes-Benz India will initially offer only 30 units of the Maybach S 580e in the country. The limited allocation adds to the exclusivity of the model, which sits at the top end of Mercedes-Benz India’s luxury sedan range.

At Rs 3.35 crore, the Maybach S 580e is positioned substantially above the regular S-Class range.

Mercedes-Benz has also highlighted the growing importance of the Maybach nameplate in India. According to Autocar India, around half of the company’s S-Class sales in the country are accounted for by the Maybach variant.

Plug-in hybrid expands Mercedes-Benz’s luxury portfolio

The launch adds another plug-in hybrid model to Mercedes-Benz India’s portfolio.

The S 580e joins the company’s growing electrified range, which includes other plug-in hybrid offerings alongside fully electric and conventional internal-combustion models.

Mercedes-Benz is therefore continuing with a multi-powertrain strategy in the Indian luxury market, offering customers petrol, electric and plug-in hybrid options.

For Maybach customers, the S 580e combines the traditional emphasis on comfort and craftsmanship with the ability to undertake shorter journeys using electric power alone.

Performance meets electrification

The Maybach S 580e demonstrates how Mercedes-Benz is adapting its flagship luxury products to electrification without abandoning performance.

The six-cylinder petrol engine provides the conventional power required for long-distance travel, while the electric motor contributes additional performance and enables all-electric driving for shorter journeys.

The 22kWh battery, 98km WLTP electric range and fast-charging capability give the sedan greater flexibility compared with a conventional petrol-only luxury car.

At the same time, the extensive rear-seat equipment ensures that electrification does not come at the expense of the comfort expected from the Maybach brand.

Conclusion

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580e has been launched in India at Rs 3.35 crore, becoming the first electrified Maybach model in the country. Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain produces a combined 585hp and 750Nm, with an electric range of up to around 98km.

With a four-seat Executive configuration, 31-speaker Burmester 4D audio system, advanced driver assistance, air suspension and extensive MANUFAKTUR personalisation, the S 580e combines Maybach luxury with a new electrified powertrain. Only 30 units will initially be available in India.
