New Delhi: The Royal Enfield Classic 650 has joined the long-term test fleet, where it will be put through a three-month, 5,000km evaluation to determine whether it can successfully carry forward the legacy of the iconic Classic 500.
The test motorcycle, finished in the Bruntingthorpe Blue colour scheme, began its long-term journey in May 2026 with the odometer reading 4,480km.
Spiritual successor to the Classic 500
For years, the Royal Enfield Classic 500 represented the quintessential Royal Enfield experience for riders seeking a larger and more powerful alternative to the 350cc models.
However, tightening emission regulations and the company’s transition towards a more modern product line-up eventually led to the discontinuation of the Classic 500, leaving a noticeable gap in Royal Enfield’s portfolio.
The Classic 650 now emerges as the closest thing to a spiritual successor to the beloved model.
Like the Classic 500, the new motorcycle focuses on delivering character, presence and a relaxed riding experience rather than chasing outright performance figures.
Bigger and more premium
Unlike the smaller Royal Enfield Classic 350, the Classic 650 feels purpose-built to occupy the top position in the Classic range.
The motorcycle features larger proportions, a more substantial stance and a premium road presence that immediately distinguishes it from its smaller siblings.
More importantly, it combines the timeless styling of the Classic series with Royal Enfield’s proven 648cc parallel-twin engine, which has already established a strong reputation for refinement and usability across the company’s 650cc range.
The combination makes the Classic 650 one of the most intriguing additions to the retro motorcycle segment.
A refined take on the retro formula
The Classic 650 does not attempt to reinvent the retro motorcycle formula. Instead, it seeks to refine and mature the concept into something that feels more effortless, relaxed and sophisticated.
Its appeal lies in its simplicity and the promise of a laid-back riding experience that has long been associated with the Royal Enfield brand.
Over the coming months, the long-term test aims to assess whether the motorcycle genuinely captures the spirit of the old Classic 500 and whether it offers a natural progression for riders looking to upgrade from the 350cc models.
An important motorcycle for Royal Enfield
The success of the Classic 650 could have significance beyond simply adding another model to the company’s line-up.
If the motorcycle succeeds in recreating the charm and character that made the Classic 500 a favourite among enthusiasts, it could become one of the most important motorcycles in Royal Enfield’s modern range.
The upcoming long-term test will evaluate its comfort, practicality, performance, fuel efficiency and overall ownership experience to determine whether the Classic 650 truly lives up to the expectations surrounding it.
For now, the Bruntingthorpe Blue Classic 650 has begun its journey, and the next few months should reveal whether it can successfully fill the void left behind by one of Royal Enfield’s most iconic motorcycles.
