New Delhi: Tata Motors is set to unveil the much-awaited Tata Sierra EV on June 30, marking the return of one of India’s most iconic automotive nameplates in an all-electric avatar.
Ahead of its official debut, the company has released a new teaser showcasing the SUV’s exterior design and confirming key details, including the introduction of a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.
The Sierra EV will become the seventh model in Tata Motors’ growing electric vehicle portfolio and is expected to play a significant role in the company’s premium EV strategy.
Familiar design with EV-specific styling
While the Sierra EV shares its overall silhouette and proportions with the upcoming internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Sierra, the electric variant incorporates several distinctive styling elements.
The front fascia adopts a cleaner and more futuristic appearance with a closed-off grille and revised detailing that is characteristic of modern electric vehicles.
Despite the updates, the SUV retains the upright stance, large glasshouse and commanding road presence that made the original Tata Sierra a cult favourite among Indian car enthusiasts.
The latest teaser also hints at the vehicle’s off-road capability, with the SUV shown traversing desert terrain.
Dual-motor all-wheel-drive confirmed
A close-up shot of the tailgate in the teaser reveals a ‘QWD Dual Motor’ badge, confirming that the Sierra EV will be equipped with Tata Motors’ new all-wheel-drive technology.
Similar to the recently unveiled Tata Harrier EV, the system is expected to employ independent electric motors on the front and rear axles, offering enhanced traction and performance.
The all-wheel-drive configuration is likely to be reserved for higher-spec variants, while entry-level models are expected to feature a single electric motor driving one axle.
Expected battery and performance details
The Sierra EV is expected to be underpinned by Tata Motors’ latest acti.ev+ architecture and is likely to share much of its powertrain technology with the Harrier EV.
Industry expectations suggest the SUV will be offered with 65kWh and 75kWh battery pack options, with the larger battery likely paired with the dual-motor QWD variants.
Although the company has not yet disclosed official figures for power, torque or driving range, the Sierra EV is expected to offer a notable performance upgrade over Tata’s current electric SUVs.
Fast-charging capability and certified range figures are likely to be announced during the official launch event.
Premium cabin and advanced features expected
The Sierra EV is expected to carry forward the premium interior showcased in the Sierra concept.
Top-end variants could feature a triple-screen dashboard setup comprising a fully digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment touchscreen and a dedicated display for the front passenger.
Other expected features include:
- Panoramic sunroof
- Ventilated and powered front seats
- Dual-zone climate control
- JBL audio system with Dolby Atmos
- Augmented reality head-up display
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
These features are expected to position the Sierra EV as one of Tata Motors’ most technologically advanced vehicles.
Rivals and expected pricing
The Sierra EV is likely to be positioned between the Tata Curvv EV and the Harrier EV in Tata’s electric SUV range.
Prices are expected to range between ₹18 lakh and ₹24 lakh (ex-showroom).
The SUV will compete with models such as the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric, MG Windsor EV, Maruti e Vitara and the upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser EV.
With its nostalgic styling, modern technology, dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and premium positioning, the Sierra EV is shaping up to be one of Tata Motors’ most significant electric vehicle launches in recent years.
All eyes will now be on its official unveiling on June 30, when the company is expected to reveal complete specifications, features and pricing details.
