In 2024, Ballari district police registered 58,375 traffic violation cases, collecting ₹2.9 crore in fines. With vehicle ownership surging across the five taluks—most households owning at least one vehicle, particularly two-wheelers—traffic density and rule-breaking have spiked.
Among key violations, 852 cases of drunk driving resulted in fines totaling ₹38.9 lakh, while 1,128 speeding cases added ₹12.1 lakh to the collection. Riding without helmets led to ₹32.8 lakh in fines from 6,557 offenders, and ₹36.8 lakh came from 7,350 cases of driving without seat belts. High beam misuse contributed ₹7.1 lakh from 1,433 cases, and overloading vehicles accounted for ₹33.1 lakh across 16,312 violations.
Police Superintendent VJ Shobharani highlighted the department’s dedication to curbing violations through awareness campaigns and stringent enforcement. However, accidents stemming from driver negligence persist. Shobharani stressed the importance of individual compliance, stating, “Safe travel depends on every road user following traffic rules.”
Despite intensified crackdowns, reports of violators using political and influential connections to evade penalties are on the rise, complicating enforcement efforts. Traffic police continue to face challenges in holding offenders accountable.
