The surge in maternal mortality at Ballari district hospital has driven pregnant women to Gangavathi’s 60-bed government sub-division hospital, a trusted alternative for safe deliveries. With prohibitive private healthcare costs, the Gangavathi hospital has emerged as a beacon of hope, successfully managing 4,790 natural births and 1,000 caesarean sections last year without maternal fatalities.
The hospital now attracts patients from Ballari, Raichur, Bagalkot, and Vijayanagara districts. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ishwar Savadi highlights the trust built on their proven safety record and commitment to normal deliveries.
District health officer Dr. Lingaraj T acknowledges the facility as the safest option for childbirths, noting its exceptional infrastructure and services. In October alone, it handled 511 deliveries, comparable to larger medical institutions. Proposals have been made to expand the hospital’s team with an additional anaesthesiologist and gynaecologist.
Recognised nationally, the hospital has won the prestigious ‘Kayakalpa’ award thrice for excellence in healthcare. Dr. Savadi credits the achievement to his team, advocating for replicating their model in other healthcare facilities to build confidence in government hospitals.
