Belagavi’s iconic Club Road will soon be officially renamed in honour of late Congress stalwart and former Union Minister B Shankaranand. The naming ceremony, organized by the B Shankaranand Birth Centenary Celebration Committee led by his son Pradeep Kanagali, will take place on Saturday.

Shankaranand, who represented the Chikodi Lok Sabha constituency for several terms, held prominent cabinet positions for over 20 years. In 2024, the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) passed a unanimous resolution to rename the road, acknowledging his significant contributions to both the region and the nation.

At a press briefing on Thursday, Pradeep Kanagali also revealed that the foundation stone for a statue of the late leader will be laid at Club Road Circle, just opposite his former residence.

The event will be graced by Karnataka’s Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, with Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi leading the ceremony. A host of dignitaries are expected, including KLES chairman Dr Prabhakar Kore, state representative in Delhi Prakash Hukkeri, MPs Jagadish Shettar and Priyanka Jarkiholi, former MP Ramesh Katti, and former MLA Firoz Sait.

Local figures such as MLAs Abhay Patil and Asif Sait, Mayor Mangesh Pawar, and Deputy Mayor Vani Joshi will also be present and felicitated during the programme.
