Witnessing a snake up close can be a nerve-wracking experience for many due to their unpredictable and potentially dangerous nature. Yet, for Nikil Kumar Mahadev Kambale, a resident of Belagavi, Karnataka, saving these reptiles has become a profound passion.
Nikil’s journey into snake rescue began at the tender age of 14. Unlike his peers, he chose to safely rescue and release a snake he encountered at school. Now, at 24, Nikil has become a celebrated local hero known for his impressive skills and dedication. He has successfully rescued over 650 serpents from perilous situations in his Athani village, earning the local nickname ‘Snake Nikhil Kumar.’ His repertoire includes various venomous species, such as cobras and pit vipers.
Currently a student from Siddhartha Colony and pursuing a diploma at JBM Polytechnic College in Terdal, Bagalkot district, Nikil has developed a particular affinity for rescuing cobras. The son of a BSF soldier, he has honed his expertise in catching these reptiles with both skill and precision. Nikil’s commitment extends beyond merely capturing the snakes; he ensures their safe return to the wild. His remarkable efforts have garnered widespread admiration within his community.
Nikil Kumar Mahadev Kambale is not alone in his heroism. In Guwahati, 16-year-old Saiyam Mazumder has also gained recognition for his dedication to rescuing animals. Saiyam was recently honoured with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, awarded by President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on 22 January. This accolade was a recognition of his compassionate work with stray animals.
Saiyam’s journey into animal rescue began when he was just 7 years old, under the guidance of his mentor, Shourabh Kant Mishra. By the age of 12, he had already earned the title of India’s youngest snake rescuer. His commitment to rescuing stray animals is profound; he regularly intervenes to help stray dogs in need of food and shelter. Saiyam’s work involves not only rescuing these animals but also ensuring they receive the necessary treatment and care. To support these efforts, he often relies on monetary assistance from his parents and local community members.
In a conversation with Times of India, Saiyam shared his motivation: “I have been rescuing animals since I was 10 years old. Whenever I see stray dogs in need of food and shelter, I rescue them with the help of local residents and provide them with the necessary care. Although many do not help, there are a few who come forward. After the dogs recover, they are released back into their original habitat.”
Both Nikil and Saiyam exemplify extraordinary dedication to their causes, showing that compassion and courage can truly make a difference. Their stories highlight the significant impact that young individuals can have on their communities through dedicated and selfless acts of service.
