Following Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu‘s allegations that animal fat was used in the preparation of the laddu at the Tirumala Tirupati temple, Nandini Ghee, produced by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), has seen a significant surge in demand from consumers and temples nationwide, according to Balachandra Jarakiholi, President of the District Milk Union (Bemul).

During a press briefing on Monday, Jarakiholi shared, “When I served as KMF president, we proudly supplied ghee to the Tirumala Tirupati temple for laddu preparation. However, years ago, a tender system was introduced, leading to a private agency taking over the ghee supply at reduced rates. After a political figure assumed the chairmanship of the temple management, we declined to provide ghee at such low prices, prioritising quality.”

He emphasised that Nandini Ghee remains in high demand, even outside Karnataka, bolstered by endorsements from notable figures, including actor Puneeth Rajkumar.

“The response from devotees has been overwhelmingly positive after Nandini ghee was used in the laddu preparation,” Jarakiholi continued. “Naidu’s statements have stirred public interest, leading to a renewed supply of Nandini ghee to the temple after four years. I urge that coconut ghee be considered for use in temples.”

In terms of financial performance, Bemul reported a profit of ₹68 lakh last year, with aspirations to reach ₹2 crore in profits next year. Plans are underway to establish a mega dairy capable of processing 4 lakh litres of milk per day, which would enable the production of various dairy products.

Regarding the state’s directive for ghee quality testing, Jarakiholi noted, “Local organisations should be responsible for this, but there appears to be a lack of attention. I urge KMF to form a dedicated team for quality assessment and to identify any adulterated ghee.”

As discussions about quality and transparency continue, the demand for Nandini ghee remains at an all-time high, reflecting both consumer trust and the importance of quality in religious offerings.
