In a shocking incident in Mugalihal village, Belagavi district, a young lineman lost his life after he came into contact with a high-voltage electric wire during maintenance work on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Maruti Avali, was performing emergency service work for HESCOM (Hubli Electricity Supply Company) when tragedy struck. He had climbed an electrical pole to attend to a fault, unaware that the power supply had not been turned off.
Eyewitnesses were horrified to see his motionless body suspended from the pole, where it reportedly remained for more than an hour before authorities arrived. The delay in retrieval triggered outrage and sorrow among local residents.
Officials from HESCOM later arrived at the scene and carefully brought the body down. They expressed condolences and assured a full investigation into the incident. According to them, an internal probe will be launched to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal mishap, including who was responsible for energising the line during ongoing repair work.
This raises serious questions about safety protocols and communication lapses in high-risk field operations. The incident has sparked concerns about whether adequate precautions and checks were in place before assigning workers to such dangerous tasks.
Police have registered a case and further inquiry is underway. Authorities are expected to take disciplinary action if negligence is confirmed.
This tragic event underscores the urgent need to reinforce worker safety standards in the power sector.
