A 32-year-old woman, Anjali Patil, from Nilji village in Belagavi taluk, passed away after undergoing a C-section at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) district hospital. Her family suspects medical negligence behind her demise.

Admitted on January 27 for childbirth, Anjali had been married for 12 years and was expecting her first child. As she did not experience natural labor, doctors opted for a Caesarean procedure. Following the surgery, her health deteriorated rapidly. Family members claim their appeals to shift her to another facility were ignored. They also allege that the hospital obtained signatures on blank papers instead of informed consent.

Outraged by the incident, relatives gathered near the mortuary in protest. Meanwhile, BIMS District Hospital Director, Dr. Ashok Kumar Shetty, clarified that Anjali had a high-risk pregnancy and was admitted at 4 PM on Monday. During the surgery, she reportedly suffered a seizure, and her blood pressure plummeted. Despite intensive efforts from experienced doctors, she could not be revived.

The hospital, which handles around 10,000 childbirths annually, sees nearly half of them classified as high-risk, necessitating C-sections. Many patients are referred from primary health centers. In the past three months, three maternal deaths have been reported at BIMS. A post-mortem examination is expected to reveal the exact cause of Anjali’s passing.
