During the Belagavi Winter Session, Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Yatnal ignited an important conversation on ensuring balanced development across Karnataka. He pointed out the disparity between the state’s regions, noting that South Karnataka enjoys the majority of infrastructure and amenities, leaving North Karnataka underdeveloped.
To ease the strain on Bengaluru Airport, Yatnal proposed upgrading Belagavi and Hubballi Airports to international status. This initiative could stimulate the local economy, fostering growth in tourism, agriculture, textiles, trade, and commerce.
Yatnal urged the government to prioritize North Karnataka’s progress by decentralizing development projects, advocating for Belagavi to be declared Karnataka’s second capital. He cited Nagpur’s role in Maharashtra as a successful example, emphasizing that such a move would eliminate the need for frequent trips to Bengaluru for official purposes.
To operationalize Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi year-round, Yatnal called for relocating more offices to the facility. He also proposed hosting alternate cabinet meetings in Bengaluru and Belagavi, ensuring a focused approach to resolving North Karnataka’s issues.
Highlighting another gap, Yatnal criticized the lack of reliable and well-maintained buses for North Karnataka, urging the government to address this pressing concern.
Yatnal’s proposals reflect a vision for inclusive growth, aiming to bridge the regional divide and empower North Karnataka to realize its full potential.
