Mysuru Airport in Mandakalli hosted a comprehensive emergency drill on Thursday at 4 PM, fulfilling the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) compliance norms. The simulation tested the airport’s ability to respond effectively to critical situations.
The scenario depicted an aircraft, VT-ABC, experiencing a fire in its starboard engine shortly after takeoff. During its emergency landing, the aircraft skidded off the runway, resulting in a simulated crash. This exercise involved a coordinated response from various agencies, including the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFF), Air Traffic Control (ATC), Airport Security (APSU), and local emergency teams such as the City Fire Brigade, state police, and health authorities.
Key elements included fire control, passenger evacuation, triage, medical response, crowd management, and evidence preservation. Command posts and a timeline-based workflow ensured realistic challenges were addressed. Hospitals like Apollo, JSS, and KR Hospital actively participated in the drill, enhancing medical response preparedness.
In the lead-up to this major event, modular exercises focusing on specific emergency responses were conducted. These drills, involving fire suppression, medical triage, and inter-agency collaboration, honed the skills of participating teams over several months.
The exercise successfully demonstrated Mysuru Airport’s robust readiness to manage emergencies and highlighted the importance of multi-agency synergy.
