Bengaluru: An assistant sub-inspector and a constable from Vijayanagar traffic police station were suspended for allegedly assaulting a man inside the station over a minor dispute last Saturday. The officers, identified as ASI Shantaram and Constable Sadiq, were removed from duty after a video of them roughing up the individual went viral on social media.
The victim, Eshwar, a resident of RPC Layout and an employee of a private firm, claimed the officers targeted him because he refused to pay a bribe. The incident began on Friday night when Eshwar was stopped during a routine check and found riding his bike under the influence of alcohol.
After being fined ₹10,000 by the court the next day, Eshwar visited the police station to retrieve his vehicle. He alleged that the officers had demanded ₹3,000 the previous night to let him go without filing a case but refused online payment. Since he couldn’t pay in cash, a case was registered.
The altercation reportedly escalated when the officers asked for his original driving license, leading to physical aggression. Following the scuffle, Eshwar complained of uneasiness and was taken to a hospital.
A senior officer confirmed that the video evidence led to their immediate suspension, and further investigations are underway.
