In Bengaluru, a software engineer and a homemaker have lost a combined Rs 3.7 crore to cyber fraudsters in separate incidents.
Sharath, 49, from East of NGEF, Kasturi Nagar, fell victim to a scam promising high returns from trading investments. After initially seeing a Facebook ad and investing Rs 50,000, he was encouraged to invest more after seeing positive returns. He ended up investing his savings and taking loans, totaling nearly Rs 2.7 crore. The fraudsters manipulated him into paying additional fees for withdrawals, ultimately preventing him from accessing his funds.
Similarly, Bindya, 41, from CV Raman Nagar, was lured by promises of lucrative returns on stock market investments. She was directed to download an app called ‘Golden Sacah Asset Management’ and began with a Rs 50,000 investment. As she attempted to withdraw her money, she was faced with numerous requests for fees and charges. She reported the fraud after realizing the scam.
Both cases have been registered under the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha (BNS). Police are working with banks to freeze the fraudsters’ accounts.
