Bengaluru: Demand for Separate Bus Lane to Improve Public Transport

The Women Garment Employees Community and Greenpeace India have submitted a petition to the Directorate of Urban Land Transport, urging the construction of a separate bus lane to enhance public transport infrastructure.

The petition, signed by 28,995 people, calls for the creation of 11 bus priority lanes in the city and the reinstatement of the bus priority lane on the Outer Ring Road. Commuters like Jayamala, who travels from Nagasandra to KR Market, believe that a dedicated bus lane can reduce travel time and encourage the use of buses over the metro, saving on travel expenses.

Data shows that a separate bus lane on the Outer Ring Road previously increased passenger numbers by 3,700 per month. With the implementation of the Shakti Yojana, women passengers have significantly increased, further underscoring the need for a dedicated bus lane. Greenpeace India campaigner Sharath M.S. is advocating for well-organised and safe transport, including the operation of 15,000 additional buses.
