In a step towards green mobility and economic empowerment, the Green Urban Mobility Innovation Living Lab (GUMILL), under IISc’s Sustainable Transportation (IST) Lab, handed over four electric autorickshaws to women from underprivileged backgrounds in Malleswaram on Saturday.
Selected through the Taliru Foundation and Auto Rickshaw Drivers Union (ARDU), two of the recipients underwent training and secured licenses before the event. The initiative addresses community needs for improved first- and last-mile connectivity while boosting local livelihoods.
GUMILL, a public-private initiative by Bosch Ltd. India and GIZ India, operates under Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with support from the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT). It focuses on urban mobility research and innovation.
Operations will commence on Monday, with driver details shared with the Malleswaram Swabhimana Initiative, which promotes a cleaner and safer neighborhood.
Additionally, GIZ India has submitted a regulatory framework to DULT, featuring case studies on shared autorickshaw models from across India. The framework aims to help authorities evaluate and legalize shared auto services in Bengaluru, fostering sustainable urban transport.
