A man from Bengaluru fell victim to a cyber fraud scheme, losing ₹21 lakh after downloading a dating app while seeking a life partner. According to reports, the 40-year-old victim met a woman named Mitra on the app “Ur My Life” in April. They quickly formed a friendship, and Mitra persuaded him to invest in Forex trading, claiming significant profits.
Initially, the man borrowed ₹50,000 from his sister to start trading and saw returns, prompting him to take out loans totaling ₹21 lakh. He invested all his money through a brokerage firm introduced by Mitra. However, communication ceased, and he was unable to retrieve his funds. Upon realizing he had been scammed, he approached the police, leading to a case being filed under the Information Technology Act and BNS section 318 (cheating).
This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of online relationships and investment schemes.
