Bengaluru to Get C-Band Doppler Weather Radar for Enhanced Forecasting
Bengaluru is set to receive its first Doppler weather radar, sanctioned by the central government on Monday, after years of requests due to severe economic losses from flash floods. The Union Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Ministry of Science and Technology have approved the installation of a C-Band Doppler weather radar, which will greatly improve weather forecasting accuracy in Bengaluru and neighboring districts.
Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Labour and Employment, and Bangalore North MP Shobha Karandlaje confirmed the development on ‘X’, stating that the radar, with a 250 km operational range, will be installed this year. This advanced technology aims to bolster the city’s early warning systems for weather-related events.
Site Selection and Installation:
- Site Speculations: Discussions are ongoing to finalize the radar’s location. Although a formal site has been identified, IMD officials have yet to confirm the exact placement. Potential sites, including Hesaraghatta, Nandi Hills, and Kempegowda International Airport, have been considered but face various logistical challenges.
- Proposed Location: Shobha Karandlaje has advocated for Jakkur in Byatarayanapura limits as the ideal location, citing its proximity to the city and suitability for uninterrupted radar operations.
Currently, the nearest Doppler radar to Bengaluru is located in Goa and Visakhapatnam, leading to less accurate forecasts, especially for sudden heavy rain events. The new radar is expected to enhance the city’s ability to predict and prepare for weather conditions, reducing economic losses and improving overall safety.
