Bengaluru: In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across the city, a 21-year-old college student was brutally murdered in broad daylight near the Srirampura railway track in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Yamini Priya, a B.Pharm student at a private college in Hosakerehalli. According to police sources, she had left home around 7 am, telling her family she had an exam. The attack reportedly took place while she was returning home after the exam.

The incident

As Yamini was walking near the Mantri Mall area, a man allegedly approached her from behind, slit her throat with a sharp weapon, and fled the spot. Locals who witnessed the horrifying act immediately alerted the police and emergency services.

Police personnel from the Srirampura Police Station rushed to the location, cordoned off the area, and collected forensic evidence from the scene. The body was later shifted to a nearby hospital for post-mortem.

Investigation underway

Senior police officials, including DCP (North), visited the crime scene. Multiple teams have been formed to trace the suspect, who is believed to have escaped on foot after committing the murder. CCTV footage from nearby buildings and the railway track area is being examined to identify the attacker and establish the sequence of events.

Preliminary reports suggest that the assailant may have known the victim, though police have not yet confirmed the motive. “We are verifying all angles, including personal enmity and possible relationship disputes,” a senior officer said.

Public outrage and safety concerns

The murder in such a busy part of the city during daylight hours has raised serious concerns about women’s safety in Bengaluru. Locals expressed anger and fear following the attack, urging the police to step up patrolling in and around the Srirampura area, especially along isolated railway tracks.

The city police have appealed to citizens to share any information related to the suspect and assured that strict action will be taken once the perpetrator is caught.
