The Bengaluru Traffic Police booked 699 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during a week-long special enforcement drive conducted across the city from May 25 to May 31.
The campaign, aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents, saw traffic personnel from all 53 traffic police stations participate in extensive vehicle checks and enforcement activities.
Over 41,000 vehicles checked
During the anti-drunk driving operation, police inspected 41,033 vehicles at various locations across Bengaluru. A total of 699 cases were registered against motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officials collected fines amounting to ₹2.33 lakh from the offenders during the drive.
Traffic police said drunken driving continues to be one of the major causes of serious road accidents and fatalities, making strict enforcement essential.
Simultaneous action against overspeeding
Alongside the anti-drunk driving campaign, police also conducted a crackdown on overspeeding violations.
A total of 387 cases were registered against motorists for exceeding speed limits, resulting in fines worth ₹1.56 lakh.
Combined, the two enforcement initiatives led to 1,086 traffic violation cases being registered during the week-long operation.
Focus on safer roads
Traffic police stated that the special drive was launched to address two major contributors to road accidents — drunken driving and overspeeding.
Officials emphasised that regular enforcement measures, awareness campaigns and strict monitoring are necessary to ensure safer roads for all commuters.
The department has indicated that similar special drives will continue in the coming weeks to strengthen compliance with traffic regulations and promote responsible driving behaviour across Bengaluru.
