The tragic death of 34-year-old Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, who died by suicide in December 2023, has sparked an intense family and legal battle, with calls for justice growing louder. Atul’s mother fainted at the Patna airport while speaking to the media, visibly overwhelmed by the pain and the ongoing fight for justice. Speaking to news agency PTI, Atul’s father voiced his frustration with the judicial system, saying, “Our judicial system is so weak… my son has told everything. He was tortured a lot, and we were not aware he was so sad.”

In contrast, Atul’s wife’s family expressed regret over his death but denied any wrongdoing. In an interview with CNN-News18, they stated, “We are not guilty of what happened. We will come out with all the proof soon. We have done nothing wrong. We regret Atul’s death.”

Atul Subhash took his own life on December 9, reportedly due to ongoing harassment from his estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family. A suicide note and a 90-minute video from Atul outlined the emotional and legal torment he had endured, including nine cases filed against him by his wife. His brother, Bikas Kumar, subsequently filed a complaint that led to an FIR against Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, her brother Anurag Singhania, and her uncle Sushil Singhania for abetment of suicide and other charges.

Sushil Singhania, however, denied any involvement, claiming that he had not been in touch with the family for years and was unaware of the legal disputes.

As the case unfolds, the Supreme Court has voiced concerns over the misuse of cruelty laws, particularly by married women, noting that such laws—originally intended to protect women—are sometimes being exploited for unreasonable demands against husbands and their families. This has added a layer of complexity to the legal battle surrounding Atul’s death, as his family seeks justice for what they believe was a prolonged and unjustified campaign of harassment.
