Bengaluru: A political controversy has erupted in the city after an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader accused supporters of a BJP MLA of vandalising her car and threatening her safety. The complaint has intensified tensions in the KR Puram constituency ahead of upcoming local elections.
Sathyavani, Vignan Nagar ward president of the AAP, on Sunday submitted a petition to the Bengaluru Police Commissioner alleging that her vehicle was damaged outside her residence by local BJP workers. She has accused supporters of KR Puram MLA Byrathi Basavaraj of being behind the incident.
Allegations of intimidation and threats
Speaking to reporters, Sathyavani claimed that the attack was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of harassment and intimidation. She warned that the MLA would be “directly responsible” if any harm came to her.
According to her, a similar episode occurred last month when around 50 large flex banners carrying defamatory and derogatory messages against her were put up across the ward. She alleged that the banners were intended to tarnish her reputation and target her personally.
Sathyavani further stated that she faced difficulties in filing a complaint at the HAL police station at the time, alleging that pressure tactics were used to prevent action. She claimed that it was only after approaching the Lokayukta that a case was registered.
Claims of police inaction
The AAP leader alleged that even after the case was registered, no arrests were made due to continued pressure from the MLA. She expressed concern over what she described as police inaction and influence from political figures.
“This incident reflects how unsafe women have become in KR Puram. It is shameful that the police are acting under the influence of the MLA,” she said, raising concerns about law and order in the area.
The allegations have not yet been independently verified, and there has been no immediate response from the MLA or the BJP regarding the claims.
Political backdrop and upcoming elections
Sathyavani indicated that the incident could be linked to her political activities and growing presence in the constituency. She said she has been actively working on civic issues such as lake encroachments and local development concerns for several years.
She also pointed out that the timing of the alleged attack coincides with preparations for the upcoming GBA elections, where she is expected to contest. According to her, the alleged acts of vandalism and intimidation are attempts to discourage her from participating in the electoral process.
Law and order concerns raised
The incident has sparked broader concerns about safety and political rivalry in Bengaluru’s KR Puram area. Allegations of vandalism, intimidation, and misuse of influence have once again brought attention to the challenges faced by local political leaders, particularly women.
While Sathyavani has called for immediate action and protection, authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter. The case is expected to draw further scrutiny as it unfolds.
Conclusion: Awaiting official response
The complaint lodged by the AAP leader has added a new dimension to the political landscape in Bengaluru. With serious allegations being made against supporters of a sitting MLA, the focus now shifts to the police and investigating agencies to ensure a fair and transparent probe.
As the situation develops, clarity from authorities and responses from the accused parties will be crucial in determining the course of action and maintaining public trust.
