New Delhi: Raghav Chadha has addressed the growing backlash following his move from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that his decision was driven by “deep disappointment” with the party’s current functioning.
In a candid video shared on Instagram, the 37-year-old Rajya Sabha MP responded to widespread criticism and questions from supporters, especially after reportedly losing around 10 lakh followers on the platform shortly after his political shift.
‘Party is no longer the same’
Chadha said the AAP had undergone significant changes since its early days and no longer reflected the values he once believed in. Describing the internal environment as restrictive, he alleged that leaders were being prevented from expressing themselves or contributing effectively.
He remarked that the party had developed a “toxic work environment,” adding that members were being stopped from speaking in Parliament and carrying out meaningful work.
Reflects on 15-year association
Highlighting his long association with AAP, Chadha said he had dedicated 15 years of his youth to the party as one of its founding members. He emphasised that his entry into politics was driven by a desire to serve, not to build a personal career.
Calling himself “the right man in the wrong party,” he said he had gradually begun to feel out of place within the organisation.
Weighed multiple options
Chadha explained that his decision to join the BJP came after careful consideration of several options. These included stepping away from politics altogether, attempting to reform the party from within, or aligning with a different political platform.
He said he ultimately chose to continue his political journey by joining the BJP.
Part of a larger exodus
The move was not an isolated one. Chadha, along with six other AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, resigned from the party and joined the BJP on April 24. He argued that the collective decision of multiple leaders reflected a broader dissatisfaction within the party.
He stated that while one or two individuals could be mistaken, the departure of several MPs indicated deeper issues within the organisation.
Rejects pressure claims
Addressing speculation about external pressure or fear influencing his decision, Chadha firmly denied such claims. He said the move stemmed from “disappointment, disenchantment, and disgust” rather than coercion.
Assures continued public engagement
Chadha assured his supporters that his political shift would not affect his commitment to public service. He said he would continue to raise issues concerning citizens with renewed energy and dedication.
He also used the platform to directly engage with younger audiences, for whom social media plays a key role in shaping political perception.
Conclusion
Raghav Chadha’s switch from AAP to BJP marks a significant political development, particularly given his prominence as a young leader and founding member of the party. While his explanation seeks to justify the move as a principled decision, the political and public response indicates that the transition will continue to draw scrutiny in the days ahead.
