The Abhaya Bravery Award honours the legacy of a courageous lady doctor who was brutally murdered at R.G. Kar Hospital, Kolkata, on 9 August 2024. Her fearless fight against corruption and dedication to justice continue to inspire women across the country. Team Abhaya recognises and celebrates women who break barriers, carve their own paths, and empower others.
Greeshma Bernad, an IT professional, powerlifter, and social activist, has been recognised under the sports vertical of the Abhaya Bravery Award. A mother of two, she has balanced her 25-year career in IT—currently serving as Associate General Manager at HCLTech—with an outstanding powerlifting journey.
She has won several powerlifting competitions and represented Karnataka in the 2024 Powerlifting India Nationals, securing the fourth position.
Beyond her professional and athletic achievements, Greeshma is a co-founder of the Eleos Foundation, an NGO dedicated to supporting women and girls suffering from critical illnesses. Through the foundation, she has assisted children battling cancer, kidney failure, and tuberculosis. She has also helped many girls continue their education, one of whom has successfully secured a job in a reputed company, transforming her family’s future.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Greeshma played a crucial role in providing food and medical aid to those in need.
A journey of resilience and giving back
Coming from a humble background, Greeshma acknowledges the support she received during her education through scholarships and generous individuals. Raised by parents who always helped those in need despite their own struggles, she firmly believes in giving back to society.
Her message to society is:
“Kindness and charity begin at home, so teach children to be kind first. The rest can be achieved with hard work. Let’s support each other to make this world a better place.”
