The rise of artificial intelligence in recruitment is creating new challenges for employers, with recruiters reporting a surge in low-effort job applications generated using AI tools, making it harder to identify genuine talent.
Surge in applications, dip in quality
Raj Vikramaditya, founder of takeUforward, has highlighted a growing concern in hiring trends, noting that while application volumes have increased significantly, the overall quality has declined. He observed that this issue is not limited to a single organisation but reflects a broader shift across industries.
Recruiters are now dealing with what he described as “noise” — a flood of applications where distinguishing truly capable candidates has become increasingly difficult.
AI-assisted submissions lack originality
Sharing a recent hiring experience for a user experience (UX) role, Vikramaditya explained that many shortlisted candidates failed to meet expectations during the evaluation stage.
Despite passing initial resume screening, a majority of submissions appeared to be copied or heavily assisted by AI tools. These applications lacked originality, effort, and a clear understanding of the assigned task.
He also pointed out that several candidates showed minimal preparation, with little evidence of independent thinking or research in their work.
Only one candidate stood out
Out of 35 shortlisted applicants, only one candidate demonstrated genuine effort and originality. That individual was ultimately selected for the role, while the rest were rejected for failing to meet basic standards.
Growing challenge for recruiters
The incident highlights a larger shift in recruitment dynamics. While AI has simplified the application process for candidates, it has also created new obstacles for employers trying to assess authenticity and capability.
Experts believe this trend could push companies to redesign hiring processes, focusing more on practical evaluations, interviews, and real-time problem-solving to filter out automated or low-effort submissions.
Need for balanced use of AI
While AI remains a powerful tool for both recruiters and job seekers, the situation underscores the importance of using it responsibly. Candidates are being encouraged to complement AI assistance with personal effort, originality, and a clear demonstration of skills.
