Expressing displeasure over the unclean airport national highway corridor, Pommala Sunil Kumar on Tuesday directed civic officials to coordinate with National Highways Authority of India and ensure the stretch is kept clean and tidy.
During an inspection of the corridor, the Commissioner instructed the assistant general manager of Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited, Yelahanka Division, to take immediate and sustained steps to improve sanitation standards. He also ordered intensified night patrolling by marshals along the route.
Focus on underpasses and flooding issues
Mr Kumar later visited the Judicial Layout Railway Underpass and asked officials to consider residents’ requests for widening the narrow underpass in coordination with the Railways to ease traffic congestion.
He also reviewed infrastructure works under the state government’s special development programme in Judicial Layout. Stressing the need for proper drainage systems, he asked officials to improve water outflow mechanisms and ensure regular maintenance to prevent stagnation.
The Commissioner then inspected the underpass near the Cafe Coffee Day outlet in Yelahanka, a location known for flooding during monsoon. Officials were told to seek technical solutions before the rainy season begins.
Clean roads by 8 am daily
In a separate review meeting with Assistant General Managers, Mr Kumar instructed officials to prioritise visual cleanliness across the city. He directed that arterial and sub-arterial roads be cleaned daily and garbage black spots be removed without fail by 8 am each day.
Officials were also asked to submit geo-location details along with before-and-after photographs of clearance drives whenever required.
Sweeping operations to be strengthened
The Commissioner further instructed that street sweeping by pourakarmikas be strengthened through better supervision by junior health inspectors and field supervisors.
The move comes as Bengaluru prepares for pre-monsoon challenges and rising public concern over civic cleanliness.
