Art in Transit, an initiative by the Srishti Institute of Art Design and Technology in Bengaluru, is set to redefine Metro stations as vibrant cultural spaces. In partnership with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation, the project aims to integrate art, design, and education into daily commutes, enhancing the transit experience with exhibitions and interactive learning opportunities.

Recently, Art in Transit launched the Living Libraries Initiative with a one-day exhibition at Cubbon Park Metro Station. The event featured an open studio with a mini art exhibit, including paintings, film screenings, workshops, and participatory installations by a diverse group of learners, artists, and educators.

Yash Bhandari, Curator of Art in Transit, emphasized the initiative’s goal: “The Metro stations, typically sterile transit hubs, are transformed into vibrant spaces of community activity and creativity. This exhibition is a testament to our ongoing collaboration with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation, rooted in public engagement and educational exploration.”

Highlights of the Cubbon Park exhibition included ‘Shifting Murals; Opening Perspectives’ by Shruti Challa, depicting the cycle of forest fire and recovery, and ‘Cubbon Palette’ by SM Riya Amrutha, showcasing Cubbon Park’s natural beauty. Workshops on illustration design, crochet, and origami were also held, engaging a wide audience from children to professionals.

In 2024, Art in Transit plans to further establish Bengaluru as a hub for creative learning, fostering connections between local designers, historians, and social organizations.
