In a remarkable moment of courage and compassion, a full-term pregnant woman gave birth to a healthy baby aboard the Mangaluru–Bengaluru Express after fellow passengers stepped in when medical help failed to arrive in time.
The mother, identified as Ponnamma, was travelling from Mangaluru towards Mysuru when she unexpectedly went into labour during the journey.
Women passengers act quickly
As the situation became critical, co-passengers alerted railway authorities and urgently sought medical assistance. However, immediate professional help was unavailable.
With the woman reportedly experiencing heavy bleeding, women travelling in the compartment took charge. Using bedsheets and shawls, they created a private enclosure inside the crowded coach and assisted the delivery with calmness and determination.
What followed was an emotional and tense half-hour as strangers worked together to safely welcome a newborn into the world.
Emergency halt at B.C. Road
Railway authorities arranged an unscheduled halt at B.C. Road Railway Station in Bantwal Taluk, expecting a medical team to board the train.
However, reports indicate doctors did not arrive in time, leaving the passengers to complete the delivery themselves.
Fortunately, both mother and child were safe after the birth.
Mother and baby stable
Following the delivery, emergency services shifted both to a government hospital in Mangaluru.
Hospital officials said Ponnamma was treated for blood loss, while both mother and newborn remain stable and under observation.
Passengers praised
Though the incident has raised questions over emergency preparedness on long-distance trains, many have praised the anonymous women passengers whose swift action ensured a safe delivery.
Their compassion turned an ordinary train coach into a place of hope
