At a public consultation hosted by BBMP on Tuesday, residents emphasized the need for a comprehensive tree plantation and management strategy. They urged the civic body to define the roles of multiple agencies involved in maintaining Bengaluru’s green cover and highlighted the importance of roadside plantations in urban forestry.

The session, held at the Institute of Wood Science and Technology, aimed to gather feedback on BBMP’s newly developed Bengaluru Urban Tree Management Manual 2024 and Tree Planting Manual 2024. While some lauded the initiative, others criticized the consultation process.

“The manuals will enhance tree planting and upkeep efforts,” said Dattatreya Devare, Trustee of Bangalore Environment Trust, stressing a holistic approach. Citizens also called for clear guidelines on the responsibilities of agencies like BMRCL, K-RIDE, BBMP’s Project & Road Infrastructure Departments, and BDA, particularly regarding the survival of compensatory plantations.

However, some found the session ineffective. Alexander James, a senior citizen and green cover advocate, criticized BBMP for distributing the manuals on the spot, giving no time for proper review. Others, like Vinod Jacob from Namma Bengaluru Foundation, pointed out that holding the meeting on a weekday excluded many concerned residents.

The debate underscores the growing demand for transparent, well-planned environmental policies in the city.
