Bangalore University has rejected a proposal to allocate 100 acres of land on its Jnanabharati campus for a premier Olympic Training Centre planned by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The proposed facility was intended to serve as a high-performance training centre for athletes preparing for future Olympic Games.
Centre sought land near SAI campus
The Union government had requested the Karnataka government to facilitate the allotment of unused land adjacent to the university campus and adjoining the existing Sports Authority of India (SAI) Netaji Subhash Southern Centre.
The proposed training facility was envisioned as a major sports infrastructure project aimed at nurturing elite athletes and strengthening India’s Olympic ambitions.
University declines request
However, Bangalore University has decided against parting with the requested land at its Jnanabharati campus.
The decision is significant as the campus remains one of the largest educational campuses in Bengaluru and has often been viewed as a potential location for large-scale public infrastructure projects.
University authorities have not publicly detailed the specific reasons behind the refusal, but the move effectively halts plans to establish the proposed Olympic training centre at the site.
Future of project uncertain
The development raises questions about the future location of the training facility and whether an alternative site will be identified elsewhere in Karnataka.
Sports infrastructure experts have often highlighted the importance of world-class training centres to support athletes competing at the highest international levels.
For now, the proposal remains in limbo as authorities explore possible alternatives to accommodate the ambitious project.
The issue is expected to attract attention from both the sports and education sectors, given the significance of the proposed facility and the large land requirement involved.
