Following months of public complaints and criticism on social media, the South City Corporation has finally started asphalting a 1.5-km stretch of Bannerghatta Road.
The long-awaited repair work has also raised questions over why action was delayed despite funds reportedly being allocated earlier. Residents and commuters had repeatedly highlighted potholes, uneven surfaces and traffic inconvenience on the busy corridor.
Civic body explains delay
In a press statement, KN Ramesh said the road had deteriorated due to drainage pipeline installation work undertaken by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
He assured that the entire damaged stretch would now be repaired immediately.
One-km stretch already asphalted
According to officials, a one-km section from Kalyani Choultry on Bannerghatta Main Road to the Namma Metro IIMB Metro station has already been asphalted.
The remaining portion of the road is expected to be completed by tomorrow night, after which the full stretch will be reopened for traffic.
Confusion over maintenance responsibility
Earlier, South Corporation engineers had reportedly distanced themselves from the road’s upkeep, saying the stretch came under the purview of Namma Metro due to ongoing infrastructure work.
This had led to frustration among commuters who use the road daily and were forced to navigate damaged surfaces for several months.
Relief for commuters expected
Bannerghatta Road is one of south Bengaluru’s major traffic corridors, linking residential zones, business centres and educational institutions. The repairs are expected to bring immediate relief to motorists and daily travellers.
Residents, however, continue to question why intervention came only after widespread public pressure.
