In a major crackdown on illegal waste disposal, the Bengaluru East Corporation (BBMP) has seized six vehicles allegedly involved in dumping construction debris and other waste along a riverbank in the eastern part of the city.
Officials said the vehicles were caught while unloading waste near the waterbody, an activity that has been contributing to pollution and environmental degradation. The seized vehicles include tipper lorries and smaller transport vehicles used for carrying construction waste.
Vehicles caught during enforcement drive
According to BBMP officials, the action was taken as part of a special drive aimed at curbing illegal dumping activities across the city. Authorities said the offenders were caught red-handed despite repeated warnings issued in the past.
Following the seizure, BBMP East Zone officials registered a case and handed it over to the police. An FIR has since been filed against the accused individuals.
Threat to rivers and water bodies
Civic authorities expressed concern over the growing menace of illegal waste dumping, stating that it poses a serious threat to Bengaluru’s rivers, lakes and drainage systems.
Officials noted that indiscriminate dumping of debris and garbage can obstruct water flow, increase pollution levels and damage fragile ecosystems. Such activities also undermine ongoing efforts to restore and protect the city’s water bodies.
BBMP warns of stricter action
Senior BBMP officials said the civic body would continue conducting enforcement drives across all zones and take strict action against habitual offenders linked to waste dumping networks.
The corporation warned that vehicle seizures, heavy penalties and legal action would be imposed on those found violating waste disposal norms.
BBMP has also urged citizens to report instances of illegal dumping to help protect Bengaluru’s environment and maintain the cleanliness of public spaces
