After facing criticism, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has reversed its decision to deploy security and detective agencies for hiring guest teachers for its schools and colleges. BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath announced on Tuesday that a new order has been issued, stating that recruitment will now be conducted by the respective School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) and College Development Councils (CDCs).

Currently, over 700 teachers are working on a contract basis across various educational levels in BBMP institutions in Bengaluru. A recent BBMP order had initially considered three private security agencies for hiring school teachers for the 2023-2024 academic year. However, this move faced opposition from the Aam Aadmi Party and former education minister and BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar.

This is not the first time BBMP attempted to employ security and detective agencies for hiring educational staff. Last year, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar criticized BBMP’s decision, emphasizing that people with expertise in education should handle recruitment to ensure quality.

As BBMP schools and colleges reopen, only 20% of the teachers are permanent staff, with the rest being outsourced.
