Bengaluru: In a significant move aimed at enhancing healthcare services and addressing civic challenges, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched two innovative initiatives. The first, ‘Save Mom,’ is an AI-based platform designed to provide comprehensive maternal and child care. The second is a pilot project focused on microchipping stray dogs to improve animal population management and vaccination tracking.

‘Save Mom’: AI-Based Care Platform

Launched on Wednesday, the ‘Save Mom’ platform seeks to improve the health outcomes for mothers and infants in Bengaluru by offering personalised and continuous care. BBMP announced the launch via its social media handle, X (formerly Twitter), sharing pictures from the event. The caption read, “#BBMP has launched the #SaveMom AI-based mother and child care platform on a pilot basis, providing comprehensive 1,000-day follow-up for pregnant women and infants to ensure timely delivery of health department services.”

This initiative will monitor mothers and infants over a crucial 1,000-day period, which spans from pregnancy through the child’s second year, a critical time for maternal and child health. The platform aims to ensure timely access to health services, enhancing overall care with intelligent healthcare solutions.

Key Features of the ‘Save Mom’ Initiative:

  • Personalised Care: The AI platform offers customised health tracking for mothers and infants.
  • Comprehensive Monitoring: Continuous follow-up over the entire 1,000-day period, ensuring timely medical check-ups, vaccinations, and interventions.
  • Improved Healthcare Access: The AI-powered system aims to make health services more accessible to underserved communities.
The project has been rolled out on a pilot basis and is part of BBMP’s larger efforts to make healthcare smarter, more efficient, and easily accessible.

Stray Dog Microchipping Pilot Project

In another forward-looking initiative, BBMP has also launched a pilot project to microchip stray dogs in select areas of Bengaluru. According to a Times of India report, this initiative is being implemented in collaboration with BIZ ORBIT, and will start in neighbourhoods like Mathikere and Malleswaram. The aim is to better manage the city’s stray dog population, a challenge that has been growing in recent years.

The microchips, approximately the size of a grain of rice, will be embedded under the dog’s skin via a painless injection. These chips will store vital information, such as:

  • The dog’s location
  • Vaccination records
  • Dates of sterilization surgeries
  • Other crucial medical history

Unlike the current method of marking dogs with paint to track vaccination status, the microchips offer a permanent and reliable solution. This will ensure that critical information about stray dogs remains easily accessible to authorities, aiding in better management of the city’s canine population.

The Need for Change

BBMP’s efforts come in response to growing concerns about the city’s health infrastructure and stray animal management. Traditional methods of tracking stray dogs, particularly marking them with paint, have proven ineffective and temporary. The microchip technology will provide long-term data retention, significantly improving the BBMP’s ability to monitor and manage these animals.

Simultaneously, the ‘Save Mom’ initiative highlights Bengaluru’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve healthcare outcomes. Maternal and infant health remains a priority, and by introducing AI-based systems, BBMP hopes to address gaps in healthcare accessibility and timeliness.

Future Plans and Expansion

While both initiatives are currently in pilot stages, BBMP plans to expand them city-wide, depending on their success. The ‘Save Mom’ platform could potentially be a game-changer for maternal and infant healthcare across Bengaluru, while the microchipping initiative could be scaled to cover more neighbourhoods, improving stray dog management on a larger scale.

These initiatives reflect BBMP’s forward-thinking approach in tackling urban challenges through innovative solutions and technology-driven platforms.
