The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is embarking on an ambitious project to reduce traffic congestion in Bengaluru by constructing an 18-km-long underground tunnel road. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 8,100 crore (approximately Rs 450 crore per kilometre), is slated for completion by January 1, 2025.

Project Details: The tunnel will connect Esteem Mall in Hebbal in the north to the Central Silk Board junction in the south, featuring five strategically placed entry and exit points. These points include the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) quarters at Central Silk Board, Lalbagh, Bangalore Golf Club, Palace Grounds, and the vacant government land next to Esteem Mall in Hebbal.

Traffic Impact: Currently, the commute between Hebbal and Central Silk Board exceeds an hour. The new tunnel is expected to reduce travel time to just 20-25 minutes. According to BBMP Chief Engineer BS Prahalad, the tunnel road is the best solution to bypass 15 major congestion points along this route.

Design and Environmental Considerations: The tunnel will be 10 meters high, with traffic speeds ranging between 40 kmph and 60 kmph. Minimal tree felling will be required at some interchange lanes within the tunnel. An elevated corridor was considered but was ruled out due to higher environmental impact, land acquisition needs, and prolonged traffic disruption.

Economic and Feasibility Aspects: The tunnel road is deemed the most economical and sustainable solution. A user fee will be implemented for maintenance, although the exact amount is yet to be determined. Prahalad emphasized that tunnel construction is scientifically proven and offers long-lasting benefits compared to other alternatives.

Historical Context: During Siddaramaiah’s first term as Karnataka Chief Minister, a proposed steel flyover between Hebbal and Basaveshwara Circle was shelved due to public outcry over ecological concerns. This tunnel project aims to address similar traffic issues with a more environmentally considerate approach.
