Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (KIA) has celebrated its 18th anniversary with a series of special initiatives highlighting its transformation from a greenfield airport into one of India’s leading aviation hubs.

Opened on May 24, 2008, the airport was later renamed in honour of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru, whose vision helped shape the city centuries ago.

Celebrating 18 years of connections

Marking the milestone, airport operator Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) reflected on nearly two decades of connecting people, businesses and cultures.

In a message shared on social media, BIAL thanked passengers, employees, partners and stakeholders for contributing to the airport’s growth journey, describing the anniversary as a celebration of reunions, homecomings, new beginnings and memorable journeys.

As part of the celebrations, travellers turning 18 between May 24 and May 31 were also offered special gifts by the airport.

Special postal tribute unveiled

In collaboration with India Post, BIAL unveiled a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation, a unique postmark recognising places of significance. A commemorative special cover and picture postcards were also released to mark the occasion.

The design features Nadaprabhu Kempegowda alongside the airport’s award-winning Terminal 2, symbolising Bengaluru’s evolution from a city rooted in heritage to a globally connected centre for innovation, enterprise and culture.

The Permanent Pictorial Cancellation is available at the airport post office, while the commemorative postcards and covers can be obtained through philatelic bureaus across Karnataka.

A gateway to global opportunities

Over the past 18 years, Kempegowda International Airport has emerged as one of India’s busiest airports, playing a vital role in supporting Karnataka’s economic growth, tourism and international connectivity.

The anniversary celebrations serve as a reminder of the airport’s remarkable journey and its continued role in connecting Bengaluru to the world
