Bengaluru: Drivers’ unions issue seven-day ultimatum
Bengaluru’s auto and taxi driver unions have demanded immediate action from the transport department against ride-hailing platforms Rapido and Uber for continuing their bike-taxi services. The unions have issued a seven-day deadline for the department to respond.
“If no action is taken within this period, we will remove yellow number plates from our autos and taxis and replace them with whiteboard number plates. Additionally, we will operate our vehicles without following the fare rates fixed by the transport department,” the unions warned.
Alleged violation of court orders
Narayanaswamy, state president of the Karnataka Drivers’ Association, said, “Rapido and Uber resumed bike-taxi services in defiance of high court orders. Despite the court clearly stating that they are not allowed to resume such services, they resumed operations. They show no regard for the state government. We demand that the transport department take strict action against this blatant violation.”
The unions’ stance highlights ongoing tensions between traditional transport operators and app-based ride services, especially regarding legal compliance and fare regulations.
Potential implications
If the unions follow through on their threats, commuters could face disruptions in auto and taxi services across Bengaluru. Operating without adherence to fare rates could also lead to disputes between drivers and passengers, escalating tensions further.
The transport department has yet to issue an official response regarding the unions’ ultimatum.
Conclusion
The situation underscores the growing friction between traditional transport operators and app-based bike-taxi services in Bengaluru. Authorities are expected to intervene soon to prevent possible disruptions and ensure adherence to legal directives.
