In a strong move to tackle growing waste management concerns, the Bengaluru South City Corporation has directed officials to initiate action against contractors failing to maintain cleanliness standards.

Commissioner KN Ramesh chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials of the Solid Waste Management department and stressed immediate corrective measures.

Action against underperforming contractors

The Commissioner instructed officials to issue termination notices to contractors whose services were found unsatisfactory.

He also called for heavy penalties against individuals and establishments found littering roads and public spaces, stating that civic discipline must be strengthened across the city.

Bulk waste generators under watch

To improve waste collection efficiency, officials were directed to prepare a list of bulk waste generators such as apartments, commercial complexes, hotels and institutions.

Engineers were told to ensure that such waste is collected only through authorised empanelled vendors to prevent illegal dumping and mismanagement.

Monitoring field staff and vehicles

The civic body also reviewed the daily functioning of Auto Tippers and compactors used for garbage collection.

Officials were instructed to closely monitor the attendance and duties of Marshals, Link Workers, supervisors and Pourakarmikas to ensure accountability and timely service.

Ban on single-use plastic to be enforced

Expressing concern over rising garbage piles and leachate issues, the Commissioner ordered stricter enforcement of the ban on single-use plastic.

Engineers were directed to conduct frequent inspections and raids on shops, markets and commercial establishments using banned plastic materials.

Focus on cleaner Bengaluru
